Why we named our chickens Marge.
We got Chickens. We named them, “Marge”.
The story started about 3 or 4 years ago when we were driving back from someplace or another and happened to pass an Amish farm with a sign, “Chickens for Sale.”
On a whim, we stopped in.
We ended up with ten chicks- ten chicks that looked identical. We talked, debated, and argued about what to call them. In the end, one name won out. Marge.
One name to Rule Them All!
So my thought on having one name was that we had a collective pet. Many animals- making one pet. So if we ended up losing one (or eight over the past few years), it’s not so bad, we still have… Marge.
As they grew, it was also very convenient to call them in by yelling, “Marge!”
Rather than, “Marge, Jess, Esther, Sue, Franny, Stella, etc!”
It was just more practical.
A new batch of Marge
So as I said, we lost eight Mage and are down to two. We gave three to a friend, one we lost to a red tail hawk, two to an opossum, one to the road and one poor chick never made it past day two.
Having only two Marge left has put a serious damper on egg production! So, Liam and I made an executive decision with the support of our Commander in Chief to purchase five more hens.
There was little debate about a new name for this group, but in the end, we settled on Marge Gen2, just adding to the flock!
